On October 26th, 1966, the 14th General Conference of UNESCO proclaimed September 8th as International Literacy Day. Since then, this date is celebrated around the world to highlight the importance of literacy as a transforming and changing agent. Today we meet in our National Commission, to celebrate the 52 years of this important day proclaimed by UNESCO and also, to commemorate the 57th anniversary of that multilateral event of emancipating character of Cuban education, the Literacy Campaign of 1961.
